First, it was the famous actor Ryan Reynolds who expressed interest in acquiring the Ottawa Senators, followed by iconic rapper Snoop Dogg.
Now, it appears another big name has reportedly joined the mix.
Since the passing of former owner Eugene Melnyk in March 2022, his daughters have taken charge of the team's operations while seeking new ownership.
The Weeknd Joins the Party
Over the past year, several renowned personalities have shown genuine interest in purchasing the franchise, and as Bruce Garrioch from the Ottawa Sun reports, the list keeps growing:
''Sources told Postmedia Saturday Canadian music superstar, The Weeknd, has agreed to be a partner in the bid by Toronto billionaires Jeffrey and Michael Kimel of the Harlo Capital Group to purchase the Senators.''
Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, widely known as The Weeknd, was born in Toronto to a pair of Ethiopian immigrants.
The four-time Grammy Award winner is not only a hockey enthusiast but also has connections to Ottawa. According to Garrioch, Michael Kimel, one of The Weeknd's partners, has had previous involvement with the NHL:
''The Kimels were part owners of the Pittsburgh Penguins until they sold to the Fenway Sports Group in 2021. They have a diverse portfolio of investments that include real estate, wealth management and the entertainment industry.
The bidding deadline is said to be on May 15th, and at this stage, it's anyone's guess who will emerge as the new owner of the Ottawa Senatorsperhaps one of these high-profile celebrities.
