His family announced that he died on Friday in British Columbia following a battle with an illness. At 91-years0old, he was the NHL's second-oldest goalie, behind only to legend Glenn Hall, who just turned 93 on October 3rd.
John Henderson got his famous nickname "Long John" due to his long and slim frame. He stood 6'5, 210 LBS and only player 1 full season with the Bruins organization and 46 career NHL games from 1954-1956. His career did not stop there though, he went on to play 14 more years of professional hockey, the majority of which was in the American Hockey League for the Hershey Bears.
His legend began due to his unorthodox style of play, because of his tall stature, he was not able to play the conventual stand-up style, instead he cut his tape off his equipment and played what is more reminiscent of what we see today, more crouched over.
Everyone here at Bruins Latest would like to send out deepest sympathies to the entire Henderson family during this difficult time.
