One year ago, as the training camp loomed, Brad Marchand of the Boston Bruins was in the midst of recovering from double hip surgery. Fast forward to Tuesday, with the retirement of Patrice Bergeron in July leaving the captaincy vacant, Marchand found himself leading the practice at Warrior Ice Arena. He's not just back but fully recovered and now holds a crucial leadership role within the Bruins.

Returning to the ice, Marchand expressed his relief, stating,

"It felt more normal. It's kind of back on track now. Just really looking forward to getting through a normal summer here and getting back underway."

Last season, the 35-year-old winger made an early comeback, acknowledging that he might have rushed his recovery, but he's eager to return to action. He mentioned,

"Mentally, when you go into the season feeling good, feeling like you had a good summer of training, it just allows you to go in with a lot of ease."

Marchand had a remarkable season, recording 21 goals and 46 assists for a total of 67 points in 73 games. This marked his 10th consecutive season with 20 or more goals.

Notably, this season brings a significant change for Marchand as he'll have a new center for the first time in 12 years. While the specific roles of the first and second-line centers are yet to be determined, Charlie Coyle and Pavel Zacha are the leading contenders.

The Bruins' training camp is slated to begin on September 20, with both veterans and prospects competing for roster spots, all eager to share the ice with Marchand and the rest of the team. Danton Heinen, who signed a professional tryout on Tuesday, is among those looking to make their mark.
