In Boston, prior to the Bruins' matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins at TD Garden this Thursday, captain Brad Marchand spent a moment reflecting on his NHL career.
While on the "Pat McAfee Show", the host humorously remarked that Marchand has transformed both the way his name is pronounced and his style of play. McAfee characterized Marchand as a troublemaker, a thorn in the side of others, and a player always seeking to cause a commotion, to which the Boston forward interjected, adding another comment to the mix.
"Really good looking," Marchand said to McAfee. "That's what I like to tell myself anyway."
Being a renowned Penguins supporter, McAfee seized the chance to tease Marchand before Thursday night's game by essentially questioning if the captain was intimidated by the prospect of facing Pittsburgh.
Throughout his entire professional career, Marchand has competed against Sidney Crosby, yet they have teamed up on the same line for Team Canada at the international level.
"He's incredible. Just a great guy," Marchand said of Crosby. "Actually, I grew up watching him play. Every year I was supposed to play against him, he was so good he would move up a level. (He's) the guy my dad would actually tell me to try and copy some of the things he would do and part of my game and the way I protect pucks and stuff is because I watched him growing up."
Marchand's decision not to provoke Crosby in games isn't due to their friendship. The rationale is more closely tied to aspects of the game itself.
"He's not a guy that I like to try to get involved with on the ice as well as guys that can take over a game," Marchand added. "So, I try to pick out guys that can't do that. They got a few of them on the team, so I try and just keep quiet against them."
