While Sweeney has had some difficulties with drafting (2015), he has managed to assemble a competitive team around veterans such as Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci, and Brad Marchand, on a consistent basis.
This has been especially evident this season when examining the trades Sweeney has made in and out of Boston over the past two years.
OUT:
Erik Haula
Ryan Donato
Craig Smith
Anders Bjork
Urho Vaakanainen
John Moore
Three first-rounders
Eight additional picks
IN:
Charlie Coyle
Taylor Hall
Hampus Lindholm
Pavel Zacha
Dmitry Orlov
Garnet Hathaway
Tyler Bertuzzi
Except for Craig Smith - who was a healthy scratch multiple times this season - and Erik Haula, none of the other players would make the current Bruins' roster.
All the acquired players are either top-six forwards or top-four defensemen, with Coyle and Hathaway being the kind of players needed in the bottom six. They have all signed significant extensions to remain in Boston as well.
Especially this season, Sweeney was somehow able to keep all his top prospects and the future doesn't look all that bad in the system.
