Coyle Stirs the Pot with Statement About His New Role
As the Boston Bruins gear up for the 2023-24 season, they'll be missing the retired duo of Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci. With their absence, the spotlight now turns to the team's remaining centers, who have a chance to move up in the ranks.
One player who's eyeing a bigger role is Charlie Coyle. He's widely seen as the likely No. 2 center for the 2023-24 Boston Bruins. Coyle, who stands tall at 6 feet 3 inches, had a solid season last year, with 16 goals and 29 assists in 82 games. It's one of his best seasons since his standout performance back in 2016-17 with the Minnesota Wild when he scored 18 goals and had 38 assists. Coyle is ready to take on more responsibilities this season and is aware of the higher expectations.
Coyle shared his excitement, saying,
"I'm excited. We all miss Bergy, and we all wish he were here, but it is a great job opportunity. So, that gets me excited. It gets a lot of guys excited because there are jobs open. There is more responsibility, and everyone wants to take that on."
Last season, Patrice Bergeron had 58 points in 78 games, while Krejci recorded 56 points in 70 games. Coyle aims to step into one of their roles and contribute similarly in terms of point production. However, he's also mindful of the leadership void going into the season and is on board with the Bruins' "lead by committee" approach.
Coyle emphasized,
"There is more responsibility, and everyone wants to take that on. We always want to be a bigger part of the team you're on, but that comes with preparation and getting ready for that. That's what this summer was. That's what I've been striving for this summer. I want that. I want to play in all situations and be a guy the team can rely on. No one is going to be Bergy or Krejci, though, but we have a lot of good pieces here that we all kind of put our hand in and take a little more responsibility this year."
