It's common for players arriving from overseas to the United States or Canada to play in the NHL to already have a grasp of English or learn it over time.
However, undrafted forward Georgi Merkulov, originally from Russia, had a rather unconventional method of learning the language.
He attributes his success to a well-known sitcom:
After scoring 34 points in 36 games during his single season at Ohio State University, Merkulov signed with the Bruins.
Now 22, he has become a strong contender for AHL Rookie of the Year, thanks to an outstanding debut season with the Providence Bruins.
Merkulov notched up 24 goals and 31 assists for a total of 55 points in 67 games, placing him in the top ten in all three rookie categories.
He finished second in points, just behind Ty Kartye of the Coachella Valley Firebirds (SEA) who had 57. Moreover, Merkulov's 55 points led the Providence team.
