Born in New Jersey, he and his two younger brothers played hockey for the University of New Hampshire Wildcats, collectively accumulating 280 games and 193 points.
Despite his brothers outperforming him in games and points, James was the first to skate at the Whittmore Center in 2007.
He sharpened his skills with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, where he formed a close friendship with Patrick Kane, who was also a top pick in the 2007 Entry Draft.
Their chemistry propelled van Riemsdyk to be the seventh-highest scorer that year. He made NHL history by scoring a goal four seconds into the second period against his former team, the Flyers.
In charity events and initiatives, he actively contributes to the growth of the game and supports charitable causes.
Van Riemsdyk, now with the Boston Bruins, looks forward to playing with them as they were his favorite opponent to play against, the Bruins, whom he has had success against in the past.
As he enters the 2023-24 season, he aims to win his first Stanley Cup with the Bruins, who rely on his consistent scoring abilities to achieve their goals.
