Things took a nasty turn after the first period buzzer, when Matthew Tkachuk delivered a powerful cross-check to Garnett Hathaway's lower back. The force was so intense that Tkachuk's stick snapped in half, leaving Hathaway writhing in pain on the ice.
To make matters worse, a fan on Twitter highlighted that Sam Bennett also took a cheap shot at the Bruins forward while he was down.
Take a look:
Tkachuk received a two-minute minor penalty for the cross-check, and the Bruins capitalized with a power play goal, extending their lead to 2-0.
Surprisingly, Bennett was not penalized for his actions.
Fortunately, Hathaway was able to return to the bench and start the second period, indicating that his injury wasn't too severe.
