With Patrice Bergeron officially retiring, the Boston Bruins find themselves facing a significant void in their leadership.

Former Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy believes that Brad Marchand could be the ideal candidate to step into that role. Cassidy expressed his thoughts during a recent appearance on the Cam & Strick podcast, highlighting Marchand's unique combination of qualities:

"Not many players possess the perfect mix of leadership attributes, but Bergeron had it all. He led by example on the ice, working harder than anyone during practice, and off the ice, he made sure everyone felt welcome and adhered to the team's values set by (Zdeno Chara). Brad has all the makings of a great leader - leading by example, a relentless will to win, and the experience of having been there and done it. He holds high expectations for everyone around him, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, his ability to communicate effectively with his teammates could be his main challenge if he assumes the captaincy."

While the Bruins had not extensively discussed the captaincy matter as of last month, it's widely anticipated that the 35-year-old Marchand will be officially named captain before the 2023-24 season kicks off.

Despite his age, Marchand possesses the qualities that make him a strong candidate to lead the team. His experience, unyielding determination to win, and high expectations align perfectly with the characteristics of a captain. Moreover, his leadership by example on the ice will undoubtedly be a valuable asset for the Bruins.
