Elliotte Friedman from Sportsnet reports that it's not Winnipeg's top center Mark Scheifele, nor all-stars Kyle Connor or Nikolaj Ehlers, but rather ex-Bruin Blake Wheeler who is connected to Boston.
As shared by @nhlwatcher on Twitter:
This season, Wheeler scored 16 goals and provided 39 assists across 72 games for Winnipeg. His six-year captaincy came to an end under new head coach Rick Bowness.
Originally drafted fifth overall by the Phoenix Coyotes in 2004, Wheeler signed with Boston as a college free agent in 2008.
During his 221 games with the Bruins, he tallied 50 goals and 60 assists before being traded to the Atlanta Thrashers midway through the 2010-11 season. The 36-year-old has one year left on his current contract, which offers an annual salary of $8.25 million.
Should Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci choose to retire, Don Sweeney must prioritize rejuvenating the team. In that context, Wheeler wouldn't be a suitable option. In my opinion, this move would not make sense for the Bruins.
