Heinen was drafted by the Bruins in 2014 where he played four years and showed great promise. After his departure he had stops in Anaheim and in Pittsburgh where his career seemed to have sputtered which resulted in not receiving a qualifying offer at the end of last season with the Penguins.
After a month of this season and remaining unsigned, Heinen's former head coach Jim Montgomery helped spearhead his return as both shared a two-year relationship with the University of Denver. Heinen and spoke about what Montgomery was like of the coach and what kind of advice he would give him.
This reunion led to the Bruins signing Heinen to a $775,000 contract October 30th.
Through 69 games, he has scored sixteen goals with 18 assists for 34 points and is a + 14. Certainly a solid turn around and worthy of a bill Masterson nomination.
