In two recent games, the Toronto Maple Leafs faced a shortage of defensemen due to injuries to Jake McCabe and Timothy Liljegren (in separate incidents), resulting in only 5 defensemen available.

Unfortunately, this situation may become a recurring issue, marking the third time in slightly over a week.

During Thursday's clash with the Boston Bruins, a crucial moment occurred with less than a minute remaining in the first period.

Liljegren found himself in a race for the puck against Brad Marchand. However, Marchand's stick interfered with Liljegren's legs, causing a hard collision with the end boards.

Liljegren remained on the ice momentarily, struggling to get back on his feet. Surprisingly, the officials decided not to penalize Marchand, despite the clear infraction.

The officiating duo for the game included Francois St. Laurent and Wes McCauley.

Although Liljegren managed to leave the ice under his own power, he required assistance from trainers to make his way down the tunnel.

This development raises concerns for the Leafs, who are already missing a top-4 defenseman in Jake McCabe.

They might need to lean more on John Klingberg than initially anticipated.
