In the midst of offer sheets flying around the NHL for young future stars, many Bruins fans were nervous that Jeremy Swayman would be next, but a new report reveals why that is highly unlikely.
Offer sheets are not black and white, and for those who do not know the exact process of what happens when a team is awarded a player through an offer sheet this is for you.
Any Club that is entitled to but does not exercise its Right of First Refusal pursuant to Section 10.3 shall be entitled to obtain Draft Choice Compensation from the New Club. The number and quality of draft choices due to the Prior Club shall be based on the average annual value of the compensation contained in the Principal Terms (as defined in Section 10.3(e) hereof) of the New Club's Offer Sheet (determined by dividing such compensation by the lesser of the number of years of the Offer Sheet or five), based on the following scale:
Under $1.51 million - no compensation
$1.51 million to $2.29 million - 3rd round pick
$2.29 million to $4.48 million - 2nd round pick
$4.58 million - $6.87 million - 1st and 3rd round picks
$6.87 million - $9.16 million - 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks
$9.16 million - $11.45 million - two firsts, 2nd and 3rd round picks
$11.45 million + - four first round picks.
So using this information, it reveals why it is almost impossible that a team will go through an offer sheet to try and land Swayman.
With the Bruins having 8.2 million in cap space left, and Swayman wanting a long term deal, a team will have to entice Swayman with a max deal for more than that amount, and if that is the case, the team will have to give up a lot.
According to PuckPedia, an NHL squad will have to give up four 1st round pick to land Swayman.
Here is the breakdown:
A 7-year offer at $8.2 million is worth $57.4 million. But according to the CBA, when it comes to calculating the annual value to determine compensation, you divide that by 5 (not 7) to determine the AAV which works out to $11.48 million. The compensation for that? Four first round draft picks.
So for those fans who are still woprried about an offer sheet coming through, i hope this clears some stuff up and puts your mind at ease.
