Surging prospect in the Bruins
Georgii Merkulov progress in the Boston Bruins organization was impressive this year particularly because of his excellent performances with the Providence Bruins in the AHL. He was consitently improving his scoring and the recognition he received as an AHL All-Star shows a lot about his potential.
While his first stint with the Boston Bruins in the NHL he didn't make a really good performance but it's not uncommon for young players to take some time to adjust to the NHL level. Except that during his few games, his positive plus-minus rating is a good sign and suggests he can be good defensively at the NHL level.
With a couple of UFA forwards potentially leaving the Bruins this summer, there will be opportunities for Merkulov to compete for a roster spot during training camp. His success in the AHL should earn him a good look from the coaching staff. Plus, if the Bruins wants to prioritize developing their young talent and internal growth in the organization, Merkulov will have his chances of making the roster.
Given his scoring touch in the AHL, Merkulov could be a valuable player for the scoring depth in the bottom six forward. It is a good sign for the team future to have a player like Merkulov progressing in their system and it will be exciting to see how he continues to develop and contribute to the Bruins in the near future.
