The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) has taken a definitive stance by implementing a comprehensive fighting ban set to take effect in the highly anticipated 2023-24 season.

Esteemed insiders of the league, Mikael Lalancette and Stephane Leroux of RDS, have confirmed this pivotal rule change. As per the new regulations, players engaging in fights will face severe penalties, including an immediate game misconduct instead of the customary major penalty, a 10-minute misconduct, a one-game suspension for the instigator, and a two-game suspension for the aggressor.

In the words of Lalancette and Leroux themselves, the alterations are succinctly summarized:

"A fight will now result in an automatic game misconduct rather than a major penalty, accompanied by a 10-minute misconduct. The instigator will face a mandatory one-game suspension, while the aggressor will endure a two-game suspension."

This significant ban echoes the ongoing decline of fighting within both the QMJHL and its professional counterpart, the NHL.

Enrico Ciccone, a renowned former NHL enforcer and esteemed member of Quebec's national assembly, has been a big advocate for this progressive measure.

The repercussions of this ban on the young prospects of the QMJHL, as they navigate their way towards the illustrious NHL, remain uncertain. Having been nurtured in an environment where fighting played a diminishing role in their development, their adjustment to a league without this prominent aspect poses a fascinating challenge.
