From 1980 to 1992, Nilan showcased his remarkable fighting abilities while playing for the Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins, and New York Rangers. His nickname, "Knuckles," was earned through his fierce approach on the ice. Notably, he still holds the record for the highest number of penalty minutes by an American-born player.
Selected as the 231st overall pick in the 1978 NHL Entry Draft, Nilan proved himself as an exceptional enforcer. He had the honor of representing Canada in the 1987 Canada Cup and even participated in the 1991 NHL All-Star Game.
Throughout his illustrious career, Nilan faced off against some of the toughest enforcers the league had to offer.
In a personal Cameo video, he candidly revealed that Terry O'Reilly of the Boston Bruins was one of his most formidable opponents. O'Reilly, renowned for his effectiveness as an enforcer, had his No. 24 jersey retired by the Bruins in 2002, having enjoyed a successful career that included three appearances in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Nilan consistently honed his fighting skills, adapting and evolving as a fighter with time. His enduring legacy as one of the NHL's greatest enforcers remains intact.
