According to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun, the Boston Bruins' general manager will be appointed as the GM of Team Canada this Friday.
Scheduled from February 12th to 20th, 2025, the tournament will showcase Canada, the United States, Sweden, and Finland, serving as a replacement for the All-Star Game. This event serves as a precursor to the 2026 Winter Olympics, where Sweeney is anticipated to join Canada's management group under Doug Armstrong.
Hailing from St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Sweeney has held the role of Bruins GM since spring 2015 and earned recognition as the NHL's General Manager of the Year in 2019.
During his playing career, Sweeney, a former defenseman, participated in 1,115 NHL games across 16 seasons from 1998 to 2004. He spent the majority of his career, 15 seasons, with the Bruins before concluding his tenure with the Dallas Stars.
Now 57 years old, Sweeney contributed to Team Canada's gold medal victory at the 1997 IIHF World Hockey Championship in Finland.
