In response, the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) swiftly took action, imposing a two-year suspension on Paul Duarte, owner of the London Nationals, following an extensive investigation into allegations of harassment, abuse, bullying, and misconduct.
Effective immediately, Duarte is prohibited from participating in any Hockey Canada-sanctioned activities for the next two seasons.
The OHF appointed an independent investigator to delve into the claims, which were reported last November. The investigation uncovered that Duarte had allegedly offered a $100 bounty on a rival player, an egregious act that contradicts the core principles of sportsmanship.
While the precise details of the misconduct were not disclosed, Phillip McKee, the executive director of the organization, confirmed their validity.
The two-season suspension serves as a resolute message that mistreatment will not be tolerated in Ontario's sporting realm, regardless of the level of play.
McKee emphasized the imperative of cultivating a safe and inclusive environment for all individuals involved in the game, underscoring the pivotal role owners play in upholding integrity throughout.
At the time of the announcement, Duarte was not available for immediate comment.
