The Athletic faced backlash after sharing an imbalanced Bruins trade proposal on social media, originating from a column by Julian McKenzie and Corey Pronman. The suggested deal for Flames center Elias Lindholm, intended for the Bruins, drew criticism for its excessive demands—a 2025 first-round pick, Matthew Poitras, and Trent Frederic. Lindholm, currently in a contract year and experiencing a dip in performance, made the proposed trade seem unrealistic.

Critics pointed out that Lindholm's current output should naturally lower his trade value, despite his strong track record. Additionally, the standout performances of Poitras and Frederic for the Bruins further questioned the validity of the trade proposal. Some argued that the Bruins could simply wait for Lindholm to hit free agency, avoiding the need to trade valuable assets.
As the 2024 NHL trade deadline approaches, it appears unlikely that the Bruins will pursue such a trade. With a well-equipped roster and no pressing need for a significant move, the Bruins are expected to stay relatively quiet. Despite attention garnered by the proposal, it seems improbable that this trade idea will come to fruition.
