While it may seem as a pretty good trade for the Bruins, it's a tough sell when you analyze it further. Losing Frederick, you're losing a lot grit in your bottom six, which the Bruins don't have much of to begin with. Matthew Poitras, while struggling right now, is a tremendous player who is only 19 and has played at a high level with the Bruins already. Lastly the first-round pick is hard because, you don't have any pick in the first 3(!) rounds this year. If you're looking at restocking your prospects, you can't keep giving away draft picks.
GM Don Sweeny in all likelihood thought about all of this and did what was best for the Bruins, kept his team intact. The Bruins are looking to be buyers at the deadline, however, not for prices that high.
