The NHL trade deadline is a constant state of anxiety and pressure as teams continue to look over the rosters and see who they can move to help improve their team. During this time, this also exposes teams with contract negotiations which is currently underway with the Bruins and Bruins forward Jake Debrusk.
Yesterday, Debrusk mentioned an uncertainty with the team as there hasn't been any movement on his contract extension. This point was hammered home by general manager Don Sweeney during a press conference today when he stated that there was a gap between both camps.
"For the player himself, going through these things and being asked publicly, and that's within the media's right to certainly inquire, we've been very private during our contract negotiations, and that will remain such. We place a high value on Jake, and we've negotiated to a level we feel comfortable with in all situations. Look, we respect the player, and they feel where their value is, and there's a gap."
"That's why contracts eventually get done or don't. So I'll leave it at that because like I've said, we have other players who are in the same situation. So again, trying to be respectful of the situation is paramount to the organization and in treating the human being at this time. You got family dynamics and wondering if people will be moving around and wondering where they may or may not land, and that's the hardest part of the business."
The 27-year-old left winger was drafted by the Bruins in 2015, in the first-round 14th overall. Over the past five games Debrusk has gone cold as he has only registered two points. Through 59 games, he has scored thirteen goals, 14 assists for 27 points and is a + 11.
He is in his final year of his $8 million deal which holds a cap hit of $4 million per season.
With no word on what the potential extension will look like, it's hard to say if the Bruins will keep him through the deadline or offer to a team who may resign him next year.
