Klim Kostin, a forward for the Red Wings, received a 10-minute misconduct penalty for 'sustaining an altercation,' an incredibly unusual decision, to say the least. Please observe the incident for yourself.
Kostin delivered a cross-check to Connor Murphy and immediately initiated a fight by shedding his gloves, swiftly bringing Murphy down afterward.
Following this, Kostin received a 2-minute minor penalty for cross-checking, another 2-minute minor for roughing, and a 10-minute misconduct for prolonging the altercation. In contrast, Murphy was handed a mere 2-minute penalty for roughing.
While it seemed like Kostin intended to maintain control over Murphy as the referees intervened, I personally believe that issuing a misconduct was unwarranted. It often feels like NHL officials strive to be the focal point of the game.
