The hockey community is abuzz with the recent actions of the Toronto Maple Leafs regarding goaltender Ilya Samsonov. National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman reported a crucial step taken by the Maple Leafs on Sunday: they placed Samsonov on waivers.

This decision comes after a series of tough outings by Samsonov, culminating in a particularly disappointing loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets last week. In that game, the goaltender conceded six goals on only 21 shots, leading to a .714 save percentage and a significant setback for the Maple Leafs.

After the decision to place struggling goaltender on waivers, the Leafs have formally declared the call-up of rookie goaltender Dennis Hildeby, as disclosed by the team's public relations department.

The choice to elevate Hildeby comes as a bit of a surprise, given earlier indications that the Leafs were cautious about fast-tracking him to the National Hockey League. Nevertheless, the developments surrounding Samsonov seem to have driven the Leafs to make this decision.

Hildeby, selected in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft as a 4th-round pick (122nd overall), has demonstrated consistent performance this season with the Toronto Marlies in the American Hockey League. He boasts a 2.20 goals against average and an impressive .919 save percentage across 15 games, affirming his skills and potential.
