In October 2023, Adam Johnson was plying professional hockey for the Sheffield Steelers of the UK's Elite Ice Hockey League when he was tragically killed when he was struck with a skate in a game versus the Nottingham Panthers. Despite the medical staff and doctors all responding quickly and efficiently to the scary situation, he passed away shorty after the injury.
The loss was a major blow to the entire hockey community and it has made executives re evaluate what sort of protection players should be mandated to wear. Many NHL'ers such as TJ Oshie were seen wearing neck guards following the incident and state they would never play with out one again.
The AHL made an official statement that all players and officials are now required to wear neck protection for the 2024-2025 season and the NHL could soon follow.
Do you think the NHL should implement this rule as well?
