The Leafs decided to sign Chris Tanev to a 6 year deal which has caused some drama within the league especially with Gary Bettman.

Bettman has been vocal that he does not like the fact that the Leafs might use LTIR loop hole towards the end of Tanev's contract since he will be pushing 40 years old at that point. Fans have been pointing out that Bettman had no problem when teams like the lightning and Golden Knights were doing it but now with the Leafs he has a problem.

If Bettman truly wants a rule change, the league needs to discuss the LTIR situation since if not, teams will continue to take advantage of the system any way they can to have the upper hand.

If the league genuinely wanted to do that [change the rules], they would find ways of plugging the loopholes in the system. This, by the way, is inherently just like the NHL. As soon as a rule is in place, teams try to find creative ways of circumventing it. Ever since the cap system was introduced, teams have found complicated, but legal ways to get around the theoretical cap ceiling.

Since using the LTIR to a team's advantage is no breaking the rules, teams will continue to do so until things change.
