On this date in 1971, Boston Bruins legend Bobby Orr became the first player to sign a $1 million deal in the NHL.

It is no surprise that Orr was the first player to be awarded this lucrative of a contract, but compared to the number we see today, it seems like pennies. Orr singed a 5-year, $1 million contract worth $200k AAV.

Even when you put the cost of his contract in today's dollars, he would be making $1,543,809 AAV worth a total of 7,719,047.62 over the 5-years.

Unfortinatly Orr's carreer was cut short but is still considered to be one of the best players of all time. In 657 regular season games for the B's and Blackhawks, he scored 270 goals and 645 assists for 915 points as a defenseman.

Orr was inducted into the Hockey Hall of fame in 1979 as the young age of 31 years old, he was and still is the youngest player to ever be inducted.
