it is normal for NHL Teams to add 1 or 2 PTO signees in order to give them a chance to earn a contract, and last year was no different for the Bruins. They gave Danton Heinen and Alex Chiasson a chance and only one of them was able to turn it into something great.
Heinen earned a contract out of camp and turned to be a vital part of the Bruins bottom-6 forward group, he even saw time on the top-2 lines. In 74 games for the B's, he scored 17 goals and 19 assists for 36 points with a great +/- rating of +16. Due to his great play he was able to earn a contract with the Vancouver Canucks this season with out having to sign another PTO.
Alex Chiasson on the other hand did not have the same fate, he was not given offered a contract with the B's and ended up signing with the red wings. He split time between the AHL and NHL but failed to showcase his skills at the highest level. This season he will compete for another chance as the Red Wings have signed him to a PTO.
Hopefully it goes a lot better for him this year in camp and can reach that next step in his career.
