GM Don Sweeny and the Bruins have received a lot of heat from fans for trading away Linus Ullmark before singing Jeremy Swayman, but it was just revealed that they had to for a big reason.

On the 32 Thoughts Podcast', NHL insider Elliotte Friedman provided some important insight on the matter.

"You'll remember the Ullmark trade was right before July 1st... Ullmark could have switched the teams on his [no-trade] list. At that point in time, they could trade Ullmark to Ottawa without asking him. And if you go to July 1st, what happens if Ullmark switches his list? So, my guess is that had everything to do with why that happened at that time."

It is an interesting catch by Friedman, if the Bruins elected to not trade Ullmark when they did, there was always the possibility that he would have put the Senators on his no-trade list. This would have made it a bigger challenge to move the former Vezina goaltender.

Nonetheless, the B's are now in a tight spot trying to sign their only star goalie in Swayman. He now is holding leverage to demand what he wants, and to rely on Koprisalo and Bussi to carry the load this season would not be the best situation.
