The Bruins have quite a stacked defensive core heading into the season with the biggest question mark being Mason Lohrei due to his small sample size so far.

Lohrei finished last season in Boston and had a huge role with the Bruins in the playoffs playing to the level of a veteran. Lohrei will likely have a decently big role to start the season as the Bruins have high expectations for him.

Mason Lohrei appears to be the clear-cut front-runner on the left side. The 6-foot-5, 211-pound defenseman loomed large on the Bruins blueline last season. After acing an early November audition with the varsity, Lohrei was recalled to Boston for good in late February, scoring four goals and 13 points. The Wisconsin native is expected to fill the void left by Matt Grzelcyk, who headed to Pittsburgh as a free agent. He also packs enough offensive punch that could warrant him earning some secondary power play time.

With the addition of Nikita Zadorov in the off-season, the Bruins have brought in another big defenseman like Lohrei but Zadorov is more defensive and does not have much offensive ability which Lohrei seems to have plenty of.

Where Lohrei lands in the depth chart is completely up to him as the Bruins will likely give him a chance to prove he can be a top 2 defenseman.
