One of the most notable names that did not get a full opportunity is 26-year-old winger, Joona Koppanen. The Tampere, Finland native was apart of the Bruins organization from 2020 to the 2023 season. In those 3 seasons, he managed to appear in 5 HL game for the B;s but was never able to stick. He scored 0 goals and only 1 assist and played the remainder of his time in the AHL with the Providence Bruins.
In last years offseason, Koppanen singed a two-way deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins. His career with the Penguins was much like his time in the B's organization, where he only appeared in 4 NHL games and played the remaining 58 games with the Wilkes/Barre Scranton Penguins of the AHL.
It was announced today that after a hard training camp and preseason, the penguins placed him on waivers. It is very likely that he will not be acquired by another team and he will report back tot he Penguins AHL affiliate.
Koppanen was drafted by the Boston Bruins 135th overall in the 5th round 2016 NHL Entry Draft, but now a part of the Pittsburgh organization, he will try to make his mark and find his way onto an NHL roster.
Let us know in the poll down below about his chances to make his way back to the NHL!
