Bruins president Cam Neely indirectly stated that they offered Jeremy Swayman a $64 million contract, which caused drama around the NHL that the RFA goalie was being greedy on his demands. His agent, Lewis Gross, made it public denying an offer of the number was ever discussed and went on to express his disappointment with the team that it has come to this point. He clearly feels the team is being deceitful and making them out to be the villains in the story.
According to NHL Insider Frank Seravalli, he agreed with his agent, he stated the team used the press conference as a way to force the hand and pressure Swayman into making him look like the bad guy.
In Cam Neely's defense, there are a lot of semantics at play here, Seravalli confirmed that the original offer was $7 million but then increased to $7.8 million AAV, which would come out to a $62.4 million contract over 8-years. In reality, Neely was 1.6 million dollars off in his comments, which at this point, means he is basically telling the truth, but the manner in which he conducted himself in the conference was where he was wrong.
Nonetheless, the ball is now is Swayman's court, he has to make the decision if he wants to be a Boston Bruin long-term after this messy situation.
