Terrible news announced regarding Drew Doughty's injury

The Los Angeles Kings took on the Vegas Golden Knights yesterday in a pre season game in Vegas which ended up going very wrong for defenseman Drew Doughty.

In the first period of the game, Doughty went to finish his check along the boards as a Golden Knights forward dumped the puck in but the Kings defenseman got his leg stuck underneath him and fell to the ice holding his knee.

Doughty headed into the Kings locker room and did not return for the rest of the game.

Hoping for a speedy recovery from Drew Doughty

Insider Frank Servalli announced that Doughty's first scan came back showing a fracture in his ankle but the team is sending him in for a second opinion before deciding what to do. There has been no update on the expected timeline for his return.

Doughty Update: Sources say #LAKings defenseman Drew Doughty sustained a left ankle injury. Initial quick x-ray showed a fracture, but he's scheduled for additional imaging today. Hope is that it is only a fracture and not additional structural damage.

Timeline TBD.

A fan who happens to also be a surgeon gave his opinion on the injury stating that if there was a ligament issue, the doctors would have seen it on the x-rays but that he will still likely need surgery.

Ortho trauma surgeon here. Structural damage would only be one of two things : ligamentous injury or cartilage / joint injury. Anything else should be picked up on the xray. Assuming it's an «ankle» fracture, twisting injury would usually be a fibula fracture, so surgery.
