His main issue with the team is not the caliber of talent, but the current attitudes by stars who are not adopting a winning culture.
The Leafs got their hands on the star 2-way forward, Ryan O'Reilly in 2022-2023, pretty close to the NHL trade deadline. The move was made in order to bolster their veteran leadership to try and make a deep run for the Stanley Cup.
O'Reilly did not skip a beat when he was acquired by Toronto, he scored 11 points in the 13 games and then continued that success in the playoffs with 9 points in 11 games. To a lot of Maple Leaf fans, it seemed like it was a lock that he would be returning to the team but he just revealed why he didn't want to.
Per the Empty Netters Podcast
It wasn't revealed which players O'Reilly was addressing specifically, and we probably will never know, but all that can be said is he was certain that he did not want to return to that kind of culture.
