Sweeney stated that, "It's clearly a priority, and Jeremy knows" and he continued to say, "He's a big part of our current team and our future." Jeremy Swayman proved how valuable he is to the team, with the great playoff performance he put on prior to the Bruins being eliminated. The Bruins tried to sign him last offseason, however, they were not able to and instead signed him to $3.475 million contract for the 2023-2024 season. This year, they would like to avoid the arbitration process.
This past season, Swayman played in 44 games with 2.53 GAA and a .916 save percentage. Meanwhile, Linus Ullmark played in 40 games with 2.57 GAA and a .915 save percentage. Now, Ullmark is set to make $5 million next year, so the Bruins may not want to tie that much money to two goaltenders. When Sweeney was asked about the goalie tandem, he stated "If we can make the math work, we're going to have the best tandem. If we can't, we're going to explore." It appears that there a chance, they may move on from Ullmark if the price tag for a Swayman extension is high.
Sweeney went on to say, "Right now, he's really happy. We were very happy to sign Linus. And in a perfect world, we would keep the tandem, because I think it's damn good," Sweeney said. "But we're going to explore opportunities. My phone's going to ring. I'm going to make calls. That's just what the job requires." Clearly the Bruins would like to keep both goaltenders, but trading Ullmark is not off the table. If they do put Ullmark on the trade block, they should get several offers so it will make it an interesting offseason for the Boston Bruins.
