His attempt to reignite the core by acquiring Eric Karlsson has failed and now with no cap space, aging stars and the cupboard that is nearly bare of prospects and draft picks it seemed he was willing to begin the teardown of this team.
That teardown may have begun this evening after Dubas made a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets by moving Pens forwards Alex Nylander and a conditional 2026 sixth round draft pick for depth forward Emil Bemstorm.
This small move clearly will not blow the doors off anyone, as most fans may not know who these players are, it's becoming clear that Dubas will begin to move players out and remold this team that is younger, faster and have more depth.
The Penguins remained well out of the playoff picture as they are 7 points from a wild card spot. With many teams beginning to heat up and the trade deadline on March 8th approaching, it's hard to imagine this team getting to the playoffs unless several in front of them collapse.
As the days move forward, it's likely Dubas will be looking to make more deals which could bode well for teams like the Bruins who could find a player that could help them down the stretch and into the playoffs.
