Boston Bruins steal goaltender Jiri Patera off waivers from Vancouver Canucks
With star goalie Jeremy Swayman still unsigned, and the drama surrounding his future increasing, the Boston Bruins announce they have claimed goaltender Jiri Patera off waivers from the Vancouver Canucks.
signed a 2-year/$775,000 deal in the offseason with the Canucks, but was placed on waivers yesterday following suit of any other teams in the NHL. He obviously did not clear as the Bruins decided to snag him up amidst all of the Jeremy Swayman issues.
Before going over to the Canucks on July 1st, he played 8 NHL games with the Vegas Golden Knights across 2 seasons. In that span, he achieved a total 3.57 goals against average and a .902 save percentage (Save%).
In 85 American Hockey League games over four seasons with the Henderson Silver Knights, the 6th-round draft pick has accumulated a career 2.92 goals against average and a .907 save percentage.
With Swayman out and Joonas Korpisalo named the starting goalie for the Bruins for the opening game vs. the Florida Panthers, there is still a major question mark on who the back up will be. Brandon Bussi played well in his last preseason game, but has had glimpses of inconsistency and Michael DiPietro has shown he is not ready to take on that role. Adding Jiri Patera will push Bussi to compete even harder as now there are 2 goalies who are fighting or for that job.
