Some of the notable names that were listed came to the surprise of many Boston Bruins fans, top prospects such as Fabian Lysell, Georgii Merkulov, Trevor Kuntar and Riley Duran were all sent down to the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League to start the 2024-2025 season.
As stated, one Bruin forward who may benefit from the Bruins cutting so many young talented players is professional tryout (PTO) signee, Tyler Johnson.
Tyler Johnson was added to the roster late in the offseason as one of the sole PTO signings, meaning his job with the team is not secured as he will have to prove to himself and to the organization that he still has a lot of game left in order to help the team win games.
The 34-year-old, former 2-time Stanley Cup champion has been one of, if not the biggest standout in training camp and in their four preseason games. Even though he has no goals, his veteran presence and hard work has been rubbing off on his linemates. In the eyes of Bruins management, Johnson's biggest asset is his versatility to play competently all three forward positions and be reliable on the powerplay and penalty kill. He can play up and down in the top-6 and bottom-6 groups which gives the team many options when injuries and
other obstacles arise through out the season.
Last season he played with Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks where he put up 17 goals and 14 assists, with a plus/minus rating of -35 on one of the worst teams in the entire league. Now that he is with Bruins and playing with better players, the team is looking for a big bounce back season out of him, that is if he is awarded a contract.
